Our Team

The true heart of Berkley Care lies in our people.  We’re a diverse group of passionate people who all bring something unique to our residents.  Here you will meet some of our team and the journey’s they have been on at Berkley Care.

Meet Lucy

Nurse

Meet Lucy Cunningham, a passionate Nursing Manager at Blenheim House who found her calling at just 10 years old after a young boy with cerebral palsy left a lasting impression and sparked her ambition to become a nurse.

Biggest challenge: “Gaining the trust of residents' families can be tough. There’s often guilt or despair because they can’t care for their loved ones themselves. But once trust is gained, collaborative care begins, and lasting relationships are formed.”

Essential qualities: Patience, empathy, a positive outlook, and a calm manner are key for care home nurses. You’ve also got to “love people, enjoy fancy dress, and dream about losing the medication keys!

Advice for aspiring nurses: “Nursing is a vocation. If you ever wake up without a passion for the job, it’s time for a change. Oh, and get used to cold tea and coffee!”

Meet Danielle

Nurse

Meet Danielle, a dedicated nurse whose journey into the profession was inspired by her own family’s experience with healthcare. After caring for her grandparents and spending time volunteering at a hospital, she knew she wanted to become a nurse.

What she loves: “I love the experience and attention that residents need. Elderly people are so thankful and express it not only in words but with a simple smile. It’s heartwarming to hear how happy residents and their families are with the support I offer. That one smile gives me the encouragement to do my job with love.”

Biggest challenge: The biggest challenge for Danielle is ensuring that residents, families, and the team are all happy, and that every day is a good day. “Listening to everyone and offering the right support, especially at the end of life, is crucial”, she says.

Advice for aspiring nurses: “Don’t be afraid to ask for support, no matter how many times it is needed. If families or residents need support, they can always talk with the nurse, and we can offer support together.”

Meet Andrew

General Manager

Meet Andrew McIntyre. From crafting styles as a hairdresser and bringing joy as a holiday rep, Andrew found his calling in social care. His journey began after his mother, a former care home manager, passed away. Inspired by her dedication, he stepped into her world, swiftly moving up the ranks.

Career transition: for Andrew, transitioning into social care was rapid but rewarding. Starting as a carer, he quickly ascended to various roles including receptionist, administrator, and eventually a general manager – all within nine months!

Transferable skills: Andrew’s people skills from previous roles were the perfect Skills for Care. His confidence, patience, and ability to connect with people have been invaluable.

Why care matters: For Andrew, care is about relationships and excellence, especially in end-of-life care. He treasures the bonds he forms with residents and their families, ensuring they receive the best possible support.

Advice for newcomers: Andrew encourages those entering care to be themselves and leverage their individual strengths in whatever role they do. Being open and engaging genuinely with others is key.

Meet Ebeneezer

Care Assistant

Meet Ebeneezer. After a stint in baking, Ebeneezer found his true calling in social care, influenced by a family member in the field.

Career transition: The biggest adjustment was overcoming initial discomforts and communication hurdles due to cultural differences. However, moving into social care allowed Ebeneezer to embrace his passion for helping others.

Transferable skills: Ebeneezer’s administrative background armed him with communication and relationship-building skills which aided in establishing trust with residents and colleagues.

Why care matters: For Ebeneezer, care is about prioritising the happiness and wellbeing of residents, making each day a rewarding experience.

Advice for newcomers: Ebeneezer advises being open to learning and to relish the opportunity to understand and prepare for the realities of ageing. He emphasises the importance of patience and a commitment to the welfare of others.

Meet Marie

Care Assistant

Meet Marie Wood. After 20 rewarding years as a teaching assistant, she discovered her passion for care during the pandemic. Moved by the dedication she saw, and after encouragement from her daughter, she took the leap into care.

Career transition: Moving into social care was a heartfelt decision for Marie. At Fernhill House, her biggest adjustment was managing emotions – both her own and those of the families adjusting to new beginnings.

Transferable skills: Marie’s essential skills from teaching – patience, active listening, and calmness – are now her tools for trust and comfort in care.

Why care matters: For Marie, care is more than a profession – it’s a privilege. Being part of someone’s life, making a tangible positive difference, and supporting residents to live Ebeneezer to embrace his passion for helping others.
independently and joyfully are what make her work so rewarding.

Advice for newcomers: Marie advises embracing the support available, engaging with your team, and utilising your existing skills.

Berkley Nurse Leadership Programme
This is Berkley Care Group's very own Nurse Programme!

The 12 month programme, developed in partnership with Somerset-based care training and support provider Caring Footsteps, takes nurses through four key areas of their work: accountability and professionalism; clinical care skills; leadership and management; and ability to take research and apply it to practice.

With nursing today being a degree-based profession, the programme aims to make the numerous opportunities available within the sector accessible to all nurses, including those who may not have studied at a degree level for many years.

The programme will provide evidence of nursing practice at degree standard and will aid the QNI’s goal of nurses in care homes being provided with the same level of skills as those working in the community.

The Berkley Nurse role will become one of an expert practitioner, clinical lead and as guiding mentors and coaches within our homes and across group. The CPD opportunities seek to ensure that all Berkley Nurses have a progressive career.
