In this episode we discuss the reality of working in care…. mythbuster style.

I first came to Burcot when I was working on my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award. I needed a place to volunteer for six months, and I’d always wanted to work in a care setting. Out of all the care homes I reached out to, Burcot was the only one to respond, and they welcomed me in right away.
After finishing my DofE placement, I continued volunteering because I truly loved it. I was in a part-time job elsewhere, but it wasn’t a good environment for me. So I went to Vicky at Burcot and asked if there were any roles available. With my experience in a kitchen setting, I started working as a kitchen assistant – and kept volunteering on the side!
When I turned 18, I realised I wanted to join the care team. I asked Vicky again, and she helped me transition smoothly into a carer role. Working at Burcot has taught me so much about dementia, empathy, and finding joy in each day. Life doesn’t stop with dementia; residents can still experience so much joy and purpose when they’re with people who genuinely care for them.
For anyone considering a placement at Burcot, I’d say: don’t hesitate to get involved. Our residents have incredible life stories and can teach you so much. Even a short visit can make a huge difference in someone’s day, and the caring skills you’ll gain are invaluable. Burcot is a special place, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
