Palliative care is specialist support for people living with a life-limiting illness, focused on comfort, dignity and quality of life. At Berkley, experienced teams manage pain, symptoms and emotional wellbeing in peaceful, private surroundings, while supporting families through what can be a profoundly difficult time. It isn't only about the final days; it's about living each day as fully and peacefully as possible.

Palliative care is the broader approach and can begin at any point after a life-limiting diagnosis, focusing on comfort, symptom management and emotional support alongside any ongoing treatment. End-of-life care is a part of palliative care, delivered in the final weeks or days. At Berkley, both are delivered with the same warmth, dignity and attention to the person, not just the illness.

Sooner than many families expect. Palliative care is most effective when introduced early after a life-limiting diagnosis, running alongside other treatment to ease pain, manage symptoms and support wellbeing. Beginning early means more time to build trust with the care team, plan thoughtfully, and shape the experience around what matters to the individual and their family. Our teams can advise on the right moment to begin.

Families are never on the outside looking in. Private rooms allow loved ones to be close, with quiet spaces for reflection and private dining rooms for gatherings and shared meals. Our teams offer emotional support, regular updates and gentle guidance throughout, and we encourage families to be as involved as feels right. Simple comforts, like tea on the terrace together, often matter the most.

Palliative care is delivered by experienced registered nurses and carers who have additional training in pain management, symptom control and emotional support for residents and families. Round-the-clock nursing ensures comfort is always prioritised, while our hospitality teams and wellbeing leads keep the atmosphere warm, unhurried and personal. Every detail, from medication timing to favourite music, is planned around the individual.

Yes, gently and always led by the resident. Music therapy, visits to the garden, listening to a favourite audiobook, sharing a family meal or simply holding hands and talking, all have a place. Activities are chosen for comfort and connection rather than stimulation, helping maintain meaningful relationships and preserving the small pleasures that make life feel familiar and loved.

Pain management is carefully planned, closely monitored and gently adjusted by our registered nurses in partnership with GPs and specialist palliative teams. We use a combination of medication, positioning, gentle therapies and environmental comfort, always responding to how the individual feels rather than the clock. Dignity and comfort come first, and we listen as much as we treat.

Yes. We understand that palliative care needs can change quickly, and our team works sensitively and without delay. After a swift but thorough assessment, we can usually welcome a new resident within days, sometimes sooner. Please call us as early as you can and we'll guide you through the next steps with care, compassion and clarity.
