Services at Portobello Place

Residential care

Residential care is for people who need help with day-to-day tasks like getting dressed, moving around and cooking dinner. It’s also for those suffering from isolation and loneliness who could benefit from being part of a community. Live life independently with the reassurance that our care team is here if you need us. And if you don’t need us, we’re still here for a chat and a cup of tea.

Dementia care

Dementia affects everyone differently, so our approach is person-centred. We see beyond the diagnosis to recognise each person’s identity and life history. Our staff undergo specialised training to understand unique needs. From art therapy to gardening, we offer meaningful activities that improve wellbeing in safe, stimulating environments designed for comfort.

Respite care

Perfect for primary carers who need peace of mind while away, or those recovering from hospital stays. Respite care provides all the benefits our permanent residents receive – from activities to meals – but on a short-term basis. Whether it’s days, weeks or months, you can relax knowing you’re in safe hands.

Community living that feels truly welcoming

Community life is central at Portobello Place. State-of-the-art facilities certainly matter, but it is the social connections that make a real difference. Conversations over morning coffee, shared interests, new friendships formed over activities, all of it creates a natural antidote to the isolation that many people fear. Everyone is encouraged to be themselves while being part of something much bigger. Living somewhere genuinely warm and welcoming, with incredible luxury touches throughout, means that any worries about loneliness fade away completely.

As well as being part of a community, people thrive at Berkley because we recognise and celebrate them as the remarkable individuals they are. If it matters to them, it matters to us. This is how we reimagine care every day.

Your care

Care that works around what matters to you, not the other way around. We talk with residents and families to understand exactly what support each person needs, then fit that around their interests, routines and preferences. Some people need minimal help, others require more intensive support – either way, it’s designed around how you want to live your life here.

Our people

Portobello Place works because of the people – residents, families and our team. Everyone here has fascinating stories to tell. Residents arrive with decades of experiences, skills and knowledge that make conversations genuinely interesting. When people feel comfortable sharing their stories and being themselves, that’s what creates the warm atmosphere you’ll notice the moment you walk through the door. Our staff understand that their job is helping everyone feel valued and giving them opportunities to keep growing and learning.

“This is not God's waiting room, this is living a very good content life with pride and dignity.”

Visit in person, more than once if you can, and at different times of day. Notice how staff speak to residents, how clean and cared-for the home feels, what the food is like and whether there's laughter. Ask about staff turnover, how care plans are reviewed and what happens if needs change. At Portobello Place, we welcome unhurried tours and encourage families to stay for a meal to get a true feel for daily life.

Trust your senses. A good care home smells fresh, sounds lively and looks lived-in rather than institutional. Watch the team: are they unhurried, warm and respectful? Ask to see a suite, the dining room and outdoor spaces. Look at the activity board, chat to residents if you can, and ask how the home handles changing care needs. Portobello Place welcomes every question, including the difficult ones.

Not typically. Portobello Place offers respite stays from as little as a week, which is ideal if you're recovering from hospital, if a primary carer needs a break or if you'd like to experience the home before making a permanent decision.
